"Knowing who we are—in terms of what we feel—is the key to knowing others; this, in turn, establishes the probability of positive, constructive, and productive interpersonal relationships—which can only lead to a more meaningful, purposeful, and healthy existence."
– Marc Brackett’s Uncle Marvin*
Greetings!
Energized. Inspired. Motivated.
Supported. Respected. Connected.
Fulfilled. Accomplished. Purposeful.
Seen. Seen. Seen.
These are just some of the words that emerged in a recent brainstorm with teachers who were asked to describe how they want to feel at work this year.
Taking a page from Marc Brackett's book Permission to Feel, I encouraged these educators to make an emotional charter, an agreement--even if only with themselves--about how they want their emotional lives to look during this year of intense uncertainty in schools.
The goal of generating these emotional outcomes is not a ruler of toxic positivity by which to judge success, but rather a reminder that with mindful, curious attention to what we ARE experiencing, especially when those sensations are unpleasant, we can actually create the sensations and experiences we seek.
Step one is to let yourself know what you want... so, what do YOU want to feel as you embark on your year, dear ones?
Stay tuned...
In the weeks ahead, I will be sharing access to a FREE module of my online course that will help you with this very skill.
